u19 High Performance

Young players leave school with the most incredible passion for the game of rugby. Their schools have looked after them in terms of developing skills, conditioning, mental toughness, balancing sport and academics, etc.

The reality of University, and indeed club sport, is that young players who have shown much promise at school end up “in the wilderness” and become directionless – not knowing what is required to make the best of their talent at this new level.

The UCT Rugby Club has seen the need to prepare bona fide students for the rigours of Varsity Cup Rugby and, to this end, have set up their own High Performance Programme under the guidance, mentorship and coaching of Andrew Hughes. By being part of this select group, young players can continue to develop all the attributes mentioned above.

Andrew has enlisted the assistance of academics, nutritionists, bio-kinetisists and sports experts in all fields to ensure the growth of these players.

High Performance players train together during the week and play in matches according to their own and the club’s requirements on a Saturday.
